Democracy Continues, Sri Lanka Style...
Pax Christi, the Catholic Movement for International Peace organised a Human Rights Day March on 10 December 1999 in Auckland, New Zealand and invited groups to take part and raise their voices against violations of human rights. Tamils of Auckland took part in this march and called for the expulsion of Sri Lanka from all organisations of Democracies:
EXPEL FASCIST, RACIST SRI LANKA FROM ALL ORGANISATIONS OF DEMOCRACIES AND CIVILIZED NATIONS
IT IS FASCIST BECAUSE IT:
1. Keeps high ranking persons convicted of human rights abuses in service, while convicting low ranking persons to hoodwink international community. e.g.:
(1) Appointing Lt. Gen. Siri Lal Weerasooriya as Commander of the Army whereas he is answerable to the Mass Graves at Chemmani as he was in overall charge of the security in Jaffna during the material time.
(2) An army officer in service who was recommended by Lt. Gen. Siri Lal Weerasooriya was rejected by United States to serve in an international team alleging that serious human rights violations were committed by him.
(3) Appointing DIG Premadasa Udugampola to a high post in the Ports whereas he was convicted of violation of human rights and several allegations of extrajudicial killings are hanging over him.
(4) Other officers in service who were convicted of human rights violations are: Punya de Silva, DIG, CID and Bandula Wickremasinghe, head of CDB.
(5) Keeping in service two judges of lower courts against whom there are serious charges.
(6) Appointing as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court a person whose conduct is currently under investigation by the Supreme Court. His role in the fabricated case against High Court Judge Mr. Mahanama Tillakaratne was shady and the charges being investigated by the Supreme Court are serious in terms of judicial appointments.
(7) On the basis of a Presidential Commission finding, a Police Sergeant was convicted by Court after being indicted with human rights violations and sentenced to 5 years hard labour. This is an example of a low ranking person being convicted to protect high ranking persons.
2. Empowers a corrupt Army to fiddle in civil administration. e.g. the situation in Jaffna.
3. Refuses to exhume the Mass Graves at Sooriyakande, Ankumbura, Nikawaratiya, Mahamadalla etc. after making a public vow in 1994 to exhume the graves and bring to justice those responsible.
4. Imposes Draconian censorship and curbs media freedom and the right to information. The Government has begun killing media personnel - Kumara and now Atputhan alias Ramesh - clear evidence of Fascism.
5. Uses the Army, Police and militia groups like EPEP , TELO , PLOT , EPRLF to terrorise opposition groups through:
(1) Disrupting their peaceful demonstrations using violence. e.g. throwing bombs at campaign meetings.
(2) Assaulting on opposition leaders, e.g. attacks on two former women Ministers - Renuka and Sunethra resulting hospitalisation.
6. Rigs elections by employing armed thugs and hooligans. Disallows independent foreign Election Monitors like the Carter Center etc.
IT IS RACIST BECAUSE:
1. Uproots Tamil people from their normal residences using the Army and Police and planting Sinhalese from outside in their houses - an ethnic cleansing process in the Eastern Districts of Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Amparai.
2. Prevents about 250,000 Tamils in Jaffna from occupying their homes, forcing them to be internally displaced and seeking to forcibly acquire several thousands of acres of land encompassing their homes and farm lands under pretext of enlarging the Palaly Army Camp and to create a Sinhala colony in this area - master plan for ethnic cleansing in the North.
3 Forcibly denies the right of free movement of Tamils and putting them in camps as in Trincomalee and Vavuniya - two current transit points. But these are shown to the international community as Refugee camps to extract money for relief assistance. Most part of such money is spent on war and these people in these camps are not given enough food or basic amenities.
4. Bombs, and shells Tamil residential areas terrorising the people to flee from their homes and making them internally displaced.
5. This uprooting of the Tamils and putting them in disarray, and then denying them shelter, food, medicine, milk-food to infants, education to children and a means of livelihood to elders is part of the genocidal or ethnocidal policy of the Sri Lankan Government.
6. Deprives educational facilities for the Tamils. The World Bank has pointed out that there are 14,000 Sinhalese teachers in excess of approved cadre while there is a shortage of 10,000 Tamil teachers.
7. Destroys the community's social fabric through rape of Tamil women.
8. The Government is writing and publishing books for use in schools. Recently, derogatory comments about the Tamils have been included in such texts for small children making the ethnic divide total and irretrievable.
9. Sri Lanka ranks third in the matter of disappeared persons - first being Yugoslavia, and second being Iraq. While the international community, and UN has intervened in those countries, they are not only condoning but also encouraging the atrocities on the Srilankan Tamils by granting lavish financial aid.
10. Arbitrary arrests, torture, extrajudicial killings and involuntary disappearances continue unabated in Tamil areas.
11. Hindu temples and Christian Churches are being desecrated and in some places destroyed and Buddhist temples erected in their place. Hindu Priests have been arrested, tortured and even killed.
12. Removing Tamil executives and other Tamil officers from Relief, refugee and Development work in Tamil areas and replacing them with Sinhala officers to start Sinhala colonies and to siphon money given by foreign countries for development towards war expenses - the Tamil officers will exposed the crime.
13. In as much as refusing to exhume Mass Graves of Sinhala youths, Sri Lanka is refusing to exhume mass graves of Tamil youths. Chemmani was exhumed only after one year of being told about it. No other grave has been exhumed - especially the ones at Navalady and Sathurukondan in Batticaloa District - there are over ten mass graves in Tamil areas.
