"To us all towns are one, all men our kin.
Life's good comes not from others' gift, nor ill
Man's pains and pains' relief are from within.
Thus have we seen in visions of the wise !."

- Tamil Poem in Purananuru, circa 500 B.C

INDICTMENT AGAINST SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka's Genocidal War - '95 to '01

Thatched huts burnt with Tamil civilians inside

Police went beserk at a Tamil refugee settlement near Pottuvil after a constable shot himself in the foot. Over 100 houses were burned down and women and children treated for gun shot wounds. Hundreds of Tamils have taken refuge at local temples and churches." (British Refugee Council publication, Sri Lanka Monitor, May 1995 under the heading, 'Killers in Uniform')

"The Batticaloa TULF M.P. Mr.Joseph Pararajasingham has called for an investigation into the attack by the Sri Lanka Pottuvil police on Tamil civilians in the Inspector Etram Milakudiyetra village, including acid throwing and burning of homes. Mr.Pararajasingham faxed President Chandrika Kumaratunga the facts concerning the incident. He said:

"On Saturday 13 May 1995, at about 3.30 p.m. the Pottuvil police entered the Inspector Etram Milakudiyetra village burnt down about 95 huts. The civilians who suffered in this attack complained to me at my home in Batticaloa.

The police have forced many of the civilians into the thatched huts and then set fire to the huts. As a result two women and an eight year old have been admitted to the Batticaloa Hospital with severe burns.

One police officer threw acid at the body of a 28 year old Tamil woman and as a result she has been admitted for treatment at the hospital.

As a result of the violence that occurred in June 1990, Tamil civilians from Komari, Pottuvil Inspector Etram, and Kundumadu villages left their homes and sought refuge in Komari Refugee Camp. In 1993, all these refugees were transferred to Inspector Etram village. Here they built their own thatched huts and lived in them.

Now, as a result of the inhuman actions of the Police, these people have sought refuge in the Pilayar Temple and in St.Anthony's Church. Even after three days, the Government has not assisted these displaced persons in any way.'" (Colombo Daily, Virakesari, 18 May 1995)
