"To us all towns are one, all men our kin.
Life's good comes not from others' gift, nor ill
Man's pains and pains' relief are from within.
Thus have we seen in visions of the wise !."

- Tamil Poem in Purananuru, circa 500 B.C

Selected Writings
R.Shanmugalingam

A tribute to the fallen heroes who foresaw what Valluvar cautioned, and who gave their lives to give posterity what Bharathythasan wished, "The day of joy of that sight!":

"varumunnark kAkkAtAn vAzhkky erimunnar
vyttURu pOlak kedum." KURAL 435

"Guard against faults yet to surprise or else
That fire will burn you like straw."

Tamils should pay attention to such warnings from Valluvar and others. These do not come in the international media. Tamils have to go looking for such illuminating intuitive illustrations.

Bharathythasan, quoted below ( with my interpretation) exhorted us to stand up as a valiant people capable of designing and developing projects that will be second to none in this world. Tamil Izham will pave the way for all Tamils to stand with raised heads and be an active part of this changing world.

"Flood-like Tamils' groups - heroic groups; they
Are one in mind but see as many in form
We dare not approach with trickery; a world disturbed
The day of joy of that sight! When? Bewitched! When?"

Deny me freedom, deny me life.

Tamil Heroes Day 2000
- A Word Garland

Fallen heroes in stone sculpture in excellence
Tamil in prose and verse abound with brilliance
Hero worship gave twist to meaningless idolatry
Monotheist "Tamil Temples" for learning propriety
Instead subjugated Tamils through pagan sanctuary.

Ceylon in Nineteen-forty eight given independence
On condition of Tamil Sinhala cooperation, co-existence
Fifty-fifty cry a strategy? Or crafty DSS's trickery?
"Every village is an open country" a naivety?
Or Tamil culture of loyalty cause for disunity?

Hill country Tamils disenfranchise started Tamil up-rise
From united Ceylon to racist Sri Lanka to Sinhalize
ACTC a Tamil disappointment? FP the party splinter!
Chelva the Tamil Nation Father the passive Tamil savior
Failed to move the arrogant Sinhala leaders to Tamil favor.

Every Tamil passivity met with Sinhala racial atrocity
Sinhala thugs pounced and trounced with alacrity
Secession the solution a unanimous Tamil decision
Nineteen-seventy six saw the Vaddukkoddai Resolution
Pogrom the Sinhala answer to Tamil Paper-Tiger inaction.

Helpless unarmed Tamils endured Sinhala domination
Crawling back to work after every race riot humiliation
Recuperation and reconciliation became their style of life
Leaderless Tamils after Chelva's demise surfed in strife
Tamil ship was drifting captain-less with hope and belief.

Employment opportunities a mirage for the youth
Tamil higher education a Sinhala aberration uncouth
Denouncing Tamils political mileage for Sinhala racists
Tamil umbrage was a natural to defy Sinhala Fascists
Armed struggle Tamil's Hobson's choice of Realists.

Educated youth resisted forced Sinhala governance
Severity engendered selective Tamil emigrants
Forcing them to forsake their roots for their shoots
Some remaining sold their birthright for easy loots
Shameless quislings licking Sinhala trickle and boots.

Self-respecting Tamils sprang into action in motherland
To defy oppression and save Tamils from racist hinterland
Tamils then only Paper Tigers now the brave Liberation Tiger
Of Tamil Izham led by Commander Pirabaharan the "Pied Piper"
Leading Tamils in "war and peace" to the land of 'Izhavar'

Race riots stopped but military mischief still menacing
LTTE defense derails Sinhala Buddhist's Tamil damaging
Tamil struggle for self-determination in dignity and honor
In Tamil land without interfere from Buddhist priestly horror
Tamil Izham freedom struggle misinformed as acts of terror?

World's closed eye view of Tamils is a blatant paradox
Yigal Amir, Rabin assassin is a hero among the orthodox
Burden of proof unsubstantiated accuse LTTE of terrorism
Pirabaharan believes in defense-war for perfect peace realism
Chandrika's "War for peace" is posture for Sinhala chauvinism.

Tamil Izham scene of killings, violence against the innocent
Fuelled by hatred and rage of impious Buddhist charlatan
Security of Tamils only in resisting alien Sinhala aggression
The Sinhalas have no business as forces of immoral occupation
In my land my motherland Tamil Izham the Tamil Nation!

Chandrika is neither a soldier nor a recognized intellectual
She is the product of self-serving lineage very political
Utterly incapable of understanding Tamil hope for survival
Tamil control today is out of the question however forceful
Even with arms and ammunitions high-tech international.

Destroyed houses, burnt down 'pany' groves Tamils will rebuild
Who resurrects lives lost for Buddha as Mahavamsa fabled
Sinhala youth, Tamils, young and old murdered by association
Tamil youth in defending Tamil Izham is the highest dedication
Liberation Tigers sacrifice deserves more than just admiration.

Sinhala desire to suppress with disinformation and Insinuation
Tamils will not suffer in silence, as it is dangerous justification
But open media publication through local friends' proliferation
The ramification then is for Sinhala-Tamil-hate neutralization
That seeks all embracing solution through internationalization.

Tamil youth wait in line to put their life on the line not in vain
But for posterity to live free with dignity and honor not in chain!
Tamils world over have to augment the war and do the needful
Without fear or favor and in harmony from domicile that is helpful
Then and then only Tamil aspirations for Izham will be REAL!

Pirabaharan and his warriors are on a mission with courage
Brave in searching for perfect peace amidst the war scourge
Thrust on Tamils the misery inflicted by Sinhala anti-Tamilism
That gripped for over 15 years and left Tamils in isolationism
We salute our fallen heroes for their high value humanism! (End)
